• AI for ELT– Course Syllabus

Walkthrough of TESOL Online with AI

AI for ELT is a free, four-week professional development course that helps educators apply artificial intelligence to course preparation and classroom practice. Participants will prepare a course, create engaging activities (quizzes, chatbots, reflection tasks, podcast), and present their work in an ebook with a teacher-set reflection. Forums are used each week for posting work and peer interaction.

    Learning Outcomes
    • Create an AI-generated self-introduction and confidently navigate Moodle.
    • Prepare a course outline, description, and lesson activities using AI tools.
    • Design interactive activities (quizzes, chatbots, reflection tasks) and a podcast with NotebookLM.
    • Compile work into an ebook and articulate reflections on AI’s role in ELT.
    • Engage in peer learning by asking thoughtful, question-based replies in forums.

How Forums Work in This Course

Forums are the main spaces to post weekly tasks and interact. Each week you will share YouTube links (not file uploads) and respond to at least one peer with a meaningful question related to their work. Short praise alone (e.g., “Great job”) does not count.

    Weekly Breakdown
    Week 1 – Introductions & Course Tour

In Week 1, participants will watch the course presentation, create an AI-generated self-introduction video using Colossyan and record a screen-share tutorial showing how to navigate the Moodle course layout. They will post both videos in the designated forums and engage by asking peers meaningful questions.

    Objectives (in order):
    1. Watch the Week 1 presentation.
    2. Create and post an AI self-introduction video (YouTube link).
    3. Record and post a Moodle navigation tutorial (left block, middle section, right block).
    4. Engage with peers by asking questions in both forums.

Forum prompts to include with the Introduction Forum:
    • What is your background and current experience with ELT, AI, learning or teaching online, and Moodle LMS?
    • What do you hope to achieve by taking AI for ELT?
    • What challenges do you encounter with using AI in developing teaching material?

Grading: Both videos required. Complete submission = 100 points (no partial grades).

Week 2 – Preparing an ELT Course with AI

In Week 2, participants will prepare for an ELT course using AI tools. They will create a course, write a course description, and organize lesson modules. They will then record two videos—one walkthrough of the AI process and one tutorial of the final result—and post them in the forum for peer interaction.

    Objectives (in order):
    1. Create a course with AI (CoassembleProProfs, or AI for ELT).
    2. Write a lesson activity (Gamma and VoxDeck).
    3. Record two showcase videos (walkthrough + tutorial) and post YouTube links in the forum.
    4. Engage with peers by asking questions about their course and lesson activity.

Grading: Both videos required. Complete submission = 100 points (no partial grades).

Week 3 – Creating ELT Activities with AI

In Week 3, participants will create interactive ELT activities using AI. They will design a quiz, build a chatbot role play, and generate a reflection task. They will also use NotebookLM to create a podcast activity from one of their Week 3 tutorial videos. Two showcase videos (walkthrough + tutorial) will be posted in the forum for feedback.

    Objectives (in order):
    1. Create a quiz (Quizgecko, Quizizz, or ProProfs).
    2. Build a chatbot roleplay (Character.ai).
    3. Generate a reflection activity (Riff Bot AI or Mizou).
    4. Create a podcast activity with NotebookLM using one of your Week 3 YouTube tutorial videos.
    5. Experience and Create a talking bot assistant using ElevenLabs.
    6. Record two showcase videos (walkthrough + tutorial) and post YouTube links in the forum.
    7. Engage with peers by asking questions about their activities.

Grading: Both videos required. Complete submission = 100 points (no partial grades).

    Week 4 – Showcase & Reflection

In Week 4, participants will compile their work into video, generate a presentation using Colossyan AI and write a teacher-set reflection on their learning. They will share their final showcase in the forum and engage with peers through thoughtful questions. Completion of all tasks earns the final certificate.

    Objectives (in order):
    1. Showcasing their work into a video.
    2. Use a presenter on Colossyan AI to create a presentation of their work.
    3. Write and post the teacher-set reflection as a forum text entry.
    4. Engage with peers by asking questions about their showcases and reflections.

    Assessment & Grading
    • Each week is graded out of 100 points with no partial grades.
    • Badges are awarded weekly for complete submissions and required peer interaction.
    • The Final Certificate is awarded upon completion of all weekly tasks and forum interactions.
